CAUTHE 2019 – 29th CAUTHE conference

Theme: Sustainability of Tourism, Hospitality and Events in a Disruptive Digital Age
Date: 11-14 February 2019

The School of Business and Law at CQUniversity was delighted to host 209 delegates to the first CAUTHE conference to be held in tropical, Far North Queensland, Australia. A total of 156 papers were presented at the conference. This was comprised of 38 full research papers, 58 working papers and 60 papers as abstract only. Of the accepted papers, 14 were presented in poster format as visual presentations. The conference showcased the extensive opportunities for engagement with the major tourism hub of Cairns and the Great Barrier Reef.

Four keynote speakers presented information on the theme of digital disruption and change:

  • Ms Pip Close, CEO, Tourism Tropical North Queensland, Creating Emotional Connection Through Digital Channels
  • Professor Dimitrios Buhalis, Smart Tourism and the Revolution on the Emerging Tourism Ecosystem
  • Professor Regina Scheyvens, Tourism Industry Research Needs in Changing Times
  • Mr Russell Boswell, Tourism Industry Research Needs in Changing Times

The conference provided delegates with ample networking and social opportunities including an informal networking function on campus at the Wharf One Café, a welcome reception at the Pool Deck, Pullman Cairns International‘, and the gala dinner and awards ceremony themed ‘Simply Red’ at the Tjapukai Dance Theatre.

PhD/ECR Workshop

Theme: Sustainability of Tourism, Hospitality and Events in a Disruptive Digital Age
Date: Monday 11 February

Around 55 participants and 30 presenters, mentors and panellists attended the Bill Faulkner PHD/ECR workshop at the Pullman Cairns International, Cairns. The workshop program included presentations about developing a teaching narrative, research methodologies, Meet the Editors’ Panel session and a research speed dating activity. As usual, targeted mentoring sessions were held with senior academics. The day finished with an informal networking event where attendees were joined by other conference delegates.
