2017

• Professor Brent Ritchie and Dr David Beirman were invited by the Australian Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade to speak at the APEC Counter Terrorism and Tourism Conference in Bali in May 2017.
• See Strengthening Tourism Business Resilience against the Impact of Terrorist Attack report on the APEC Counter-Terrorism Working Group’s Workshop on 9-10 May 2017, Bali, Indonesia.
• Presentation on the Kaikoura Earthquake Recovery Plan for the NZ Government by Professor David Simmons (Lincoln University) at CAUTHE 2017.

2016

• An inaugural SIG symposium titled Crises Response and Recovery for the Tourism Industry was held immediately after the CAUTHE 2016 conference in Sydney on 12 February. The aim of the symposium was to discuss issues facing the Australian tourism sector about crises preparedness, response and recovery. The SIG was well attended with around 35 participants. Conversations between industry and academia covered examples of best practice, relevant research applications, questions that need answering and issues concerning disaster recovery that remain problematic for the tourism industry.
• 2016 edition of Journal of Hospitality and Tourism Management, on Tourism Risk, Crisis and Recovery was guest edited by Drs David Beirman and Gabrielle Walters.

2015

• David Beirman attended the first meeting of DFAT’s Smartraveller Consultative Group for 2015. DFAT has broadened the Consultative group beyond the travel Industry to include a number of important government organisations including AUSTRADE and the Australian Passport Office. CAUTHE will continue to be represented. DFAT has released a revised Consular Strategy which essentially highlights the services which are provided to Australians travelling Internationally and those which are not covered- leaving consular staff free to deal with emergencies rather than trivialities. A core element of the strategy is to encourage Australians travelling abroad to appropriately insure themselves for any illness or material loss incurred when travelling.
• David Beirman and Gabby Walters actively promoted the Tourism Risk, Crisis and Recovery symposium to CAUTHE members, the academic community and the travel industry. Through articles and event listings posted in ETB News, Travel Daily and E Global Travel Media over 30,000 Australian and New Zealand Travel professionals were reached.
• David and Gabby received a range of excellent papers for the special edition of the CAUTHE journal.
• Members met at CAUTHE 2015 to discuss how to raise the profile and activity level of the SIG.
• A one-day document security workshop with Paul Westwood, OAM, CEO, Forensic Document Security Services was held on 23 January 2015.  The issue of document security was highlighted during the MH 370 disappearance. It has widespread implications for tourism risk management in areas as diverse as passport security, financial transactions and travel related documents. The workshop was open to all CAUTHE members, but especially for SIG members and those people with an interest in tourism related security.

2014

• Tourism Crisis and Disaster Management in The Asia Pacific: book co-edited by Brent Ritchie and Kom Campiranon, published by CABI Publishing, Wallingford UK, released in early 2014.
• SIG members released a number of publications including papers by five SIG members in a special issue of the International Journal of Event Management Research, edited by David Beirman.
• A submission was made to the Australian National Audit Office on the delivery of Australian Consular services with emphasis on the services for travellers.

2013

• CAUTHE 2013 Conference: approximately 20 papers were devoted to risk, crisis and recovery issues, including the keynote address by Tim Hunter, Director of Christchurch and Canterbury Tourism who spoke about the challenges Christchurch has faced in recovering from the 2011 earthquake.
• The Conversation: article contribution by a number of members
• The International Journal of Event management Research: David Beirman is guest editor of a special risk management issue due for publication in early 2014.
• DFAT Smartraveller Consultative Group: David Beirman represented CAUTHE at two meetings.
• Australian Emergency Management Institute (AEMI), Mt Macedon Victoria: residential seminar for educators at the Australian Emergency Management knowledge hub,  an excellent resource for tourist academics and students to access disaster and crisis management information and to contribute research.

2012

The SIG was approved in mid-2012.

• UN World Tourism Organisation Conference theme Integration of Emergency Management and Tourism: held at the University of Technology, Sydney on 20-21 September. David Beirman, co-organiser, with the Australian Emergency Management Institute and the UNWTO. Brent Ritchie and David Beirman made individual presentations and a special session of the conference focussed on research which included a panel session involving academics and industry leaders.  Seven SIG members were among the 45 attendees from nine countries.
• Tourism Crisis and Disaster Management in the Asia Pacific Regional: approval for book to be published by CABI Publishing in 2013. Most of the chapters accepted for inclusion in the book are from SIG members.
• Australian Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade’s Smartraveller Consultative Group: David Beirman represents CAUTHE as a member in this group. 2013 marks the 10th year of the SCG.
• CAUTHE 2013 Conference: over 20 full and working papers relating to the field of tourism risk, crisis and recovery were accepted.
