Research Capability & Industry Engagement – Webinars and workshops
September 4, 2026
The purpose of this initiative is to build a coherent and scalable pathway for tourism, hospitality, and events academics to enhance their competitiveness in research funding, deepen meaningful industry partnerships, and translate research into impact. The webinars provide CAUTHE members with a practical overview of the research funding landscape across Australia and New Zealand, including how different grant categories, funding schemes, and partnership models operate in universities and research institutions.
Webinar 1 – CAUTHE Webinar Navigating the research grants landscape in Australia for tourism, hospitality and events
Hosted by Professor Mostafa Rasoolimanesh from Edith Cowan University, this webinar featured Professor Sara Dolnicar from The University of Queensland and Professor Brent Moyle from Griffith University. The webinar aimed to help tourism, hospitality and event academics better understand Australia’s research funding landscape and identify funding pathways suited to their research interests and career stages. It provided practical guidance on how different grant schemes operate, where funding opportunities can be found, and how academics can build effective partnerships with government agencies, local councils, destinations and industry organisations.
Professor Dolnicar focused on Australian Research Council (ARC) grants, explaining the application process and offering practical advice for developing high-quality proposals and strengthening an applicant’s research profile. Professor Moyle discussed local government and regional grants and projects, including how researchers can approach destinations and local government authorities to establish collaborations and secure funding. He also shared practical examples from projects undertaken by his research team.
Overall, the webinar provided participants with practical strategies for identifying suitable funding opportunities, building productive partnerships and preparing more competitive research proposals.
