CAUTHE 2018 – 28th CAUTHE conference

Theme: Get Smart: Paradoxes and Possibilities in Tourism, Hospitality and Events
Date: 5-8 February 2018

The Tourism Discipline in the University of Newcastle’s Newcastle Business School in the Faculty of Business and Law were thrilled to host around 206 delegates in the landmark NeW Space City Campus in the heart of the coastal city of Newcastle, New South Wales, Australia. A total of 190 papers were submitted, with 163 presented at the conference. This was comprised of 37 full research papers and 114 working papers. In addition, 12 papers were presented in poster format as visual presentations.

Opening addresses were provided by:

  • Ms Cherie Johnson, Speaking in Colour, My Aboriginal Lens: Connecting Cultures
  • Mr Barney Collins, EJE Architecture, Culture and Heritage in NeW Space Design

Three keynote speakers presented information on the theme of ‘Getting Smart’:

  • Professor Annette Pritchard, The Paradox of Tourism Enquiry
  • Professor Sara Dolnicar, Peer-To-Peer Accommodation Networks: A Tsunami to Fear, The Perfect Wave to Catch… Or Both?
  • Professor Cathy Hsu, Hospitality and Tourism Education: Research and Future Directions

The conference provided delegates with ample networking and social opportunities including an informal networking function on campus at the NeW Space Campus Green, a welcome reception at the FogHorn Brewhouse, and the gala dinner and awards ceremony themed ‘Hollywood at Honeysuckle’ at the Honeysuckle Hotel.

PhD/ECR Workshop

Theme: Get Smart: Paradoxes and Possibilities in Tourism, Hospitality and Events
Date: Monday 5 February

Around 70 delegates attended the PHD/ECR and MCA workshop. The theme encouraged researchers to engage a critical lens on the creation and generation of knowledge in tourism, hospitality and events. For the first time at the CAUTHE workshops the ECR and MCA participants combined for the afternoon workshop sessions on Impact and Organizational Citizenry.
