Call for Book Chapter Submissions: ‘Gay Tourism: New Perspectives’ (working title)

This book aims to address the newly emerging and shifting issues in the field of gay tourism*, especially in light of significant societal and technological change (Monterrubio 2018; Vorobjovas-Pinta & Hardy 2016). Whilst the last decade marked a tremendous change in LGBT rights, it also presented new issues and challenges. This book hopes to capture how these changes have affected the behaviour and motivations of gay travellers.

In addition, gay travel research has been dominated by Western perspectives and traditions. As such, it is necessary to incorporate voices from non-Western perspectives and cultures. To date, the emphasis within the small amount of existing literature pertaining to gay travel research in non-Western countries has been on the negative perceptions associated with such travel. This book calls for more nuanced research on this dimension as it sees the opportunity to contribute towards a broader understanding of gay tourism on a global scale.

We invite you to participate by submitting chapter proposals in the form of abstracts about aspects of gay tourism and new perspectives in the field on the following topics, but not limited to:

  • Gay tourism and the non-Western world
  • Gay tourism in the digital world
  • Gay tourism and destination branding
  • Commercialisation of gay events
  • Gay tourism and societal change
  • Politics of gay tourism
  • Gay leisure (e.g. cruises, resorts, shopping)

* The term gay is used here in a broader sense. It includes a variety of terms such as LGBT, homosexual, queer, lesbian and gay men, as this reflects the diversity of terms found within the literature.
